BREAKING – After spending nearly 20 years in prison for the murder of beloved Tejano superstar, Selena Quintanilla Perez, Yolanda Saldivar was found dead in her cell by deputies during a routine walk through of the Mountain View unit in Gatesville, Texas. Attempts to resuscitate Saldivar proved futile as she appeared to have been dead for several hours before discovery.
Cause of death will be announced pending autopsy and toxicology reports.
It had been rumored that Saldivar had been suffering from kidney ailments in recent years, and was reported to have had been petitioning for an early release.
Saldivar shot and killed Selena on March 31st 1995. Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla discovered that Saldivar had been embezzling large sums of money from the singer’s fan club and boutiques. She was subsequently fired. Three weeks later Selena agreed to meet Saldivar at the Days Inn in Corpus Christi so she could retrieve some important business documents which Saldivar had been refusing to hand over.
After concocting a tale about being raped in Mexico which turned out to be completely false, Selena drove Saldivar to the hospital where medical technicians found no evidence of rape. When Selena returned Saldivar to her motel room, she demanded the documents again. An argument ensued and Yolanda fired one shot at the singer from a .357 magnum as she attempted to flee the room. The single bullet severed a major artery in Selena’s right shoulder. She died shortly thereafter from massive internal bleeding.
Selena’s murder shook the Hispanic community to it’s core. She is still revered as “La Reina De Tejano”, meaning the “queen” of Tejano. Even after her meteoric rise to fame was cut painfully short, she is still considered to be the Mexican equivalent to Madonna. Saldivar’s death ironically falls just a few months after the hugely popular first annual “Fiesta De La Flor”, organized by Selena’s family which honored the late singers memory and legacy and also celebrated Hispanic music and culture.
