After pleading guilty to child pornography charges and paying to have sex with minors, disgraced Subway pitchman, Jared Fogle, is finally facing the music. A tune I imagine being quite sweet to Fogle’s ears, but deeply unsettling for the rest of the sane, and decent world.
Due to a modified plea agreement, Fogel will only have to serve 12 months in a minimum security prison, after which he will be on probation for 24 months. The only saving grace, perhaps, is Fogle will be required to register as a sex offender for the next 50 years.
This sentencing is reminiscent of the Du Pont Heir case, wherein a wealthy defendant got away with horrific charges and received little more than a slap on the wrist. Judge Jan Jurden sentenced Robert H. Richards IV to 8 years probation for the heinous crime of sexually assaulting his own toddler. Charges which would surely put a poorer man away for life–and rightfully so!
Controversy already surrounded the estimated time Fogle would be spending behind bars; a pitiful 5-12 years for the multiple disgusting crimes he committed. This seems to be a slap in the face to anyone who wrote the judge and pleaded for Fogle to receive a stiffer sentence.
Understandably, the 1 year sentence has left many aghast. Recordings were recently aired on Dr. Phil in which Fogle can be heard speaking at length about his crimes. Unbeknownst to Fogle, the woman had been recording their conversations for 4 years while assisting the FBI. In the wake of this damning evidence, many assumed Fogle would receive 25 to life. Sadly, in cases such as these money often enables criminals to dodge stiffer penalties.
